Simply that when you submit an article to a directory it has to go through the approval process and if you didn't make it through all the hoops, it gets rejected.
When I publish it to my own blog, I approve it instantly and it gets published with no reservation. Then by applying a few SEO procedures to it, I probably get as much or more traffic as I would from the article directory.
